Miss Hong Kong 2009 Results:
Winner: #4 Sandy Lau
1st runner up: #10 Germaine Li (From New York, USA)
2nd runner up: #8 Mizuni Hung (From Vancouver, Canada)

Special Awards:
Miss Photogenic: #9 Candy Yuen
Miss International Goodwill: #6 Carly Wong
Tourism Ambassador Award: #6 Carly Wong
Trendy Image Award: #8 Mizuni Hung

PB accurately predicts the top three (although not in the exact order). Congratulations to Sandy Lau, a beautiful Miss Hong Kong and deserving winner. She is one of the most stunning Miss Hong Kongs since Sonija Kwok (1999). She stands at 5'3.5" (one of the shortest MSHKs) and will represent Hong Kong at Miss Chinese International 2010 and possibly Miss World. First runner up Germaine is likely to compete at Miss World 2009 or Miss International 2009.

The 39th Miss Hong Kong Pageant ended successfully last night. At the end of the two and a half hour pageant, #4 Sandy Lau won the title. She stands at 5'3.5", one of the shortest Miss Hong Kongs (the shortest is Shirley Tse, MSHK 1985). Sandy is also the cousin of Miss Hong Kong 2002 and Miss Chinese International 2003 1st runner up, Tiffany Lam. Beauty runs in this family!

Sandy won due to her facial beauty and her stable interview skills. She handled the night with poise despite some nervousness at the opening number. The first runner up is Germaine Li from New York, USA. She is the first New York Overseas contestant to make the top three. Her stable interview skills and eloquence was also a placement reason. Third place went to Mizuni Hung from Vancouver, Canada. Mizuni became a favorite overtime after a great transformation. She is another Vancouver beauty to make the Miss Hong Kong top three.

Congratulations to all the winners!

The 39th Miss Hong Kong Pageant would be held in Hong Kong Coliseum tomorrow night. Ten contestants would compete for the title after months of training, preparation, and after traveling to Hokkaido, Japan.

The four Miss Photogenic judges have been announced. They are Hong Kong Singer, Leo Xu, Miss Chinese International 2001, Bernice Liu, Rick Chan, and model Amanda S. They will help choose the Miss Photogenic winner, which usually makes the top 3.

Miss Hong Kong 2009 Final Predictions:
Winner: #10 Germaine Li
1st runner up: #8 Mizuni Hung
2nd runner up: #4 Sandy Lau
Top 5 Finalists (4th to 5th place): #6 Carly Wong and #9 Candy Yuen

Alternates, watch out for them (6th to 7th place): #5 Winnie Ma and #7 Mandy Wong

Special Awards:
Miss International Goodwill: #10 or #8
Miss Photogenic: #4

Comments: This year seems to be a extremely hard year. No clear front runners and anybody can win. It all depends on their final performance (i.e. Kayi in 2007 and Edelweiss in 2008?). Some darkhorses might come out and take the crown.

With that kept in mind, I decided to pick #10 Germaine as this year's PB's Miss Hong Kong 2009. She seems to have the overall package (little height, decent look, English background). She has also gained some momentum throughout the months, becoming a darkhorse since the start and up to this point - a top 3 favorite (source: The Sun Hong Kong Newspaper). According to this newspaper, #8 Mizuni also gained some popularity and has became a top 3 favorite too! #4 Sandy has become the big favorite since day one, and thus that means the top 3 press favorites are my picks too!!

Suprisingly, I did not see their list ahead of time (I made my decisions yesterday and read the newspaper right now). Will the list be the final outcome tomorrow?

Why did I pick #8 and #4 as second and third place?
Sandy is pretty but the main reason I didn't pick her is because of her height. Sandy is the shortest contestant standing at 5'3" and Mizuni has a decent look (very friendly girl, may not be surprised if she does win though). It would be great if Mizuni does compete at Miss International (thus I list her as 1st runner up).

As for the top 5 picks, #6 Carly seems to be a great choice since she is Tourism Ambassador winner. She might do well at interview. Contestant #9 Candy was nominated by Hong Kong actress Sandra Ng and she does have the big eyes. If Miss Ng saw something in her, then she will do well (not as well as winning though in my opinion...).

Lastly the alternates/darkhorses. Contestant #5 Winnie Ma has a great look and ok height too. However, does the pre-show I watched, I did not see her shine much. She was the favorite in the beginning but has lost some favoritism overtime. If she is able to do well tomorrow, it is possible that she can make the top 3. Contestant #7 Mandy seems to be very calm during the pre-show (with the exception of the cow feeding). She spoke quite well with her friend and the contestants. Watch out for her (another Kayi??).

And then finally are some internet favorites: #2 Esther and #3 Grace. Some internet fans saw something in her that I didn't though :P..... And then is #1 Hilaire who is a flight attendant (flight attendants usually do well in MSHK) and was rumored to be one of the rigged top 3.....

Pageant Beauties wishes all the delegates the best! May the best girl win and hopefully there will be no Hea Miss Hong Kong.....

Pageant to be held on Saturday, new Miss Hong Kong to be crowned by former Miss Hong Kong

This year's Miss Hong Kong pageant, the 37th Miss Hong Kong pageant would be held on August 22, 2009. Ten delegates will compete for the title and the chance to represent Hong Kong at Miss Chinese International, Miss World, and Miss International.

According to various sources, Miss Hong Kong 1977 Loletta Chu would crown this year's Miss Hong Kong. The reason - Last year's Miss Hong Kong, Edelweiss Cheung did not fulfill her duties as Miss Hong Kong. Edelweiss did not attend functions and events, and forfeited to compete at Miss World 2008 (held in Johannesburg, South Africa) and Miss Chinese International 2009 (held in Foshan, China).

Edelweiss used sickness as a excuse for her absence. Unfortunately, many HK reporters filmed her with her boyfriend during her "sick days." This led to many speculation that she is lying and lazy to attend functions. Unfortunately, TVB had to freeze her and even though she has contacted TVB recently on retaking work, TVB has not cared her.

Miss Hong Kong 1977 Loletta Chu, who also participated at the Miss Universe 1977 pageant in Perth, Australia (placing 16th overall) will crown this year's winner. She has promised to attend the event. This will be the FIRST year that the reigning Miss Hong Kong is unable to crown the new winner. However, it is not the first year where the presenter is not the reigning Miss Hong Kong (i.e. 1973 - the first Miss Hong Kong was crowned by Miss Universe 1972, Kelly Anne Wells).

Performers for the pageant are confirmed to be Bosco Wong, Chilam Cheung, Gary Chaw (and the contestants of the new TVB Singing Competition). Eric Tsang, Nat Chan, and Amigo Chui are confirmed to be this year's hosts. There are five judges that will determine this year's top 3 and Miss International Goodwill. Among them are Miss Hong Kong 1988 and Miss Chinese International 1988, Michelle Reis and Hong Kong actor, Simon Yam, and Liu Xuan (China Gymnastics Athletic). The panel of Miss Photogenic judges are still UNKNOWN.

Webmaster's comments on this year's contestants:
Undeniable there is no frontrunners in this year's pageant. The contestants all have chances. There is no tall contestant like last year's winner Edelweiss Cheung (who is still missing and unfulfilling her duties as MSHK 2008).

The most beautiful contestant facially is #4 Sandy Wong (who is the big press favorite). However in recent years, not all the big favorites win (i.e. 2002, 2007, and 2008).

It can be anybody's game this year. It all depends on their final performance (i.e. 2007). However making a great impression on the judges is very important. This year's judges are still unannounced, but it is confirmed that Eric Tsang and Nat Chan will be the hosts and Bosco Wong will be one of the performers.

Heading back to the contestants, another contestant that impressed me was #8 Mizuni. She is not the most beautiful contestant, but is very friendly (will definitely be Miss Friendship). In the past two years, the most congenial contestants won 1st runner up (Grace Wong and Skye Chan). Mizuni has the potential to do well too.

Number 10's Germaine seems to be poised too. Hailing from New York, USA (my hometown), she seems ready. A darkhorse in the pageant (not a press favorite), she can come out and take it too. Number 7's Mandy also left me a impression. She does not possess the typical Miss Hong Kong look, but she made it up with her eloquence (watch the pre-show). She may pull a surprise and snatch Miss International Goodwill (#6's Candy has a good chance too!).

More commentary on the contestants later. Here is an updated list of top 5 favorites:
